Summary:
Coming back to Iran from Vienna, Marjiane felt a sense of dislocation because she wanted people around her to understand what she suffered and her hardships, but instead she felt more isolated. She had hopes that coming back to Iran would forget her past, but instead she became depressed when she realized that her past lives had caught up with her. Marjiane’s friends try to help her by inviting her skiing but all she does is smoke and do nothing. Her parents sent her to doctors and psychoanalysts and see what they could do about it. During meetings, Marjiane described her stories and situation on how in Iran she had no identity. After going there for couple times, she came to the conclusion that they only way to feel happy was to commit suicide.
She tried to kill herself while her parents went on vacation but she realized that she will have to do more than just cutting herself with a butter knife and sitting in a bath while bleeding till death. She later took all her prescribed pills and went to bed hoping to never wake up again. After three days of hallucinations and sleep, she went back to her therapist and he said that the only way she survived was with interventions with God.
At the end of the chapter, Marjiane began to rebuild her identity for her adulthood and believed that God wanted her to live to the fullest so she decided to take advantages of this new opportunity. She completely changes by cutting her hair and beginning working out. Not only she changed her physical appearance but also began to feel like she fits in somewhere for the first time in year.
