Sam Pastol : Research Project pt.2

Now it’s time to ask yourself, “so what?” Who else should care about the topic you wrote about? Why should they care? Why is it important?

  1. Identify a category of people who should know more about your research – for example young women, or US voters, or people over 50, or college students, etc. They are your audience.

The category of people that should known more about this subject should be all college students and here why. Students nowadays leave high school without a sufficient understanding of Slavery and its development throughout our history, rise and fall.

Having said that, schools struggles finding a better job teaching American slavery and it’s impact on the world. Teaching this topic and going into details including the violence, ideologies and more can make a lot of people uncomfortable with implications raised from the past and present.

  1. What portion of your research is most important for your audience to know about? Highlight 2 to 4 key ideas, concepts or facts from your research they should know about. Why is important for them to know these key ideas, etc.? Might it help them personally? Might it make our world better in some small or large way? Can the key ideas, etc. be linked to an objective system of ethics or values such as the Hallmarks, Catholic Social Teaching, or another system?

Slavery: Slavery is an important part of our history because it spanned many cultures, nationalities and religions from ancient times to present day. In other words, history of slavery can teach us about slavery today and much more. This economic phenomenon may help people to personally understand themselves and the significant difference between the world it used to be and the world of today. Even though slavery is a complex and thought subject to talk about it, being concerned and aware will definitely change the world in a large way so that it does not occur again. This subject is linked to the Hallmark 2 titled: “We honor the dignity and sacredness of each person” which highlights: developing and appreciating relationships respecting individual differences and creating environments that encourages the development of the whole person.
that respecting individual differences and

The Atlantic Slave Trade: In the beginning of the 15th century, The Atlantic Slave trade was responsible for the forced migration of millions African Americans. Not only it is considered as a crime against humanity, the majority of kidnapped Africans weren’t already slaves in Africa. In addition, this trade could help people to personally understand its geographical spread and its effect in the long run. That been said, this geographical spread causing a diversity is what will make our world better in a large way. This subject is linked to the Hallmark 5 titled: “We Embrace the Gift of Diversity” which highlights: welcoming people of diverse cultures, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic circumstances, gender, age, sexual orientation and faith traditions, developing education programs expanding our knowledge to understanding the diversity in the community we live in and finally, initiating strategies and supporting services to respect individuals learning styles.

A slave’s life: By law, slaves used to be personal property of their owners and they absolutely have no rights and no freedom. They had no constitutional rights, meaning testifying in court against someone was not even an option. Furthermore, slaves were separated from their family and friends which was one of the greatest fear a black person in slavery faced. When ever a master died, his slaves were often sold for the benefit of his heirs (a person legally entitled to the property or rank of another on that person’s death.) Being aware of the living conditions of enslaved people can help reenforced our understanding about Slavery. That being said, the world will be better in a large way by learning and understanding about all of those things said previously. This subject is linked to the Hallmark 7 titled: “We develop holistic learning communities which educate for life” which highlights; working with and within a risk-taking and flexible organization exhibiting compassionate and socially responsible actions in response to issues of justice, understanding and respecting the unique roles and girls of women and men in the society. As well as fostering educational activities that develop self-directed learners capable of self-evaluation, critical thinking and creative responses to life situations.

  1. What is the best way to communicate your key ideas to your audience? Would it be a newspaper article? A drawing or painting? A poem? A youtube video? A dance? A brochure? An essay? Determine the best format for you to use in communicating your ideas to your audience.

I figured the best to communicate my key ideas would be by doing a brochure.
