1. Describe your selection process. What motivated you to analyze the photograph you chose? Why is it important to you? What story, topic, or issue does the visual highlight or reinforce and why is that story/topic/issue of personal interest to you?

I have chosen page 42, entitled "Doughnuts with CARE". I wanted to know why this short story was named that way. The precious smile of Biti Rose Nasoni, motivated me to analyze the photograph. It's important to me because I do want to know a bit more about Biti Rose Nasoni's life and how did she became who ever she is today. The image is highlighting that moment when Biti Rose runs a small business which is selling doughnuts with the help of CARE, which is a micro savings program. I like the fact that she is working for someone and earning way more than what she used to do before as a day laborer. She is obviously doing for herself but also for her family.

2. Describe your process of "actively reading" the text. Did you make any annotations next to the visual? Did this visual stand out from memory?

While actively reading, I have underlines important information, sentences and words. I have written annotation on the side of the text to keep track of informations that might be useful for this essay. Most of all my pages have annotations, or at least one thing written to summarize that specific small part of the story. I have made some annotations next to the visuals such as: Imaginary black and white, houses not fully build that looks like walls of bricks, the ground looks like sand or dirt, the lady behind Biti Rose seems curious, Biti Naso is smiling from selling her doughnuts to a stranger etc... Yes the visual stand out to my memory because when I look at it, directly in my mind, I wonder why is this lady smiling.

3. Describe the Visual Text Itself. Use lots of detail, including the caption and surrounding text. What draws the reader's attention first and why, etc? What cultures and/or cultural assumptions are represented in the photograph? How do the authors use logic, values, or emotion (logos, ethos, pathos) to make their message more effective for their reader?

The caption under the visual says "Biti Rose Nasoni runs a business selling doughnuts thanks to a CARE microsavings program in her village in Malawi." in Italic so that it makes sure that it's noticeable when the reader is reading. The picture is in black and white because it was probably taken a long time ago. They made sure that the picture was taken while Biti Rose Nasoni has a big smile on her face. It shows to the reader that she seemed happy about what is was doing. The photograph was placed on the first page to get the reader's attention. Although, the photograph has nothing to do with the text on the first page but instead it has to do with text on the second page. The author decided to put the photograph on the first page with a caption to give a hint to the reader what will be talked in the story. The caption has three main words; Biti Rose Nasori, doughnuts and CARE mircrosavings. They have put the photographer's name on the top, right side. In the photograph, the women on the left in the picture is a stereotype because she fits the cultural assumption that women are always the one working. She is caring a huge pot in her hand and is curious what Biti Rose Nasori is giving to a random men.

4. Analyze the Authors. Who are they? What is their "situation"? Purpose? Intended Audience?

The two authors of A Path Appears are Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDuun. Nicholas Kristof is an American journalist, author, columnist born in Chicago, Illinois who won two Pulitzer Prizes (an award for achievement in newspaper, magazinee, online journalism, literature and musical composition). He has traveled more than 150 countries in total and keep on doing what he likes to do.   Sheryl WuDuun, Nicholas Kristof's wife is an American business executive, lecturer and writer and a Pulitzer Prize winner born in New York City. She was the first Asian-American reporter hired at the Times. They both wrote A Path and Appears published in 2014, that talks about making a difference and how caring affects us.

5. Analyze the Context and Cultural Connections:
- How did this visual connection with your past experiences, identity, generation, etc? Why was the message important for you?
- What was the authors' intended message with the visual text? How did the visual fit within the authors' overall arguments in the book so far?

The visual doesn't connect to any of my past experiences, identity or generation although the message send from the visual is important because it shows that people have the option too make little money by selling the product that they were told to. In that visual specifically, Biti Rose Nasoni accepted to join CARE. With the money she loan, she would use it productively (in this case doughnuts) and make twice more.

The author's intended message with the visual text is to show that the main character Biti Rose Nasoni was struggling and started with nothing, now she is happy by selling doughnuts for only two cents.

Comments

  1. What I know is that Bidi Rose is a farmer, who sells doughnuts to her neighbors. Her objective is to take care of her family and herself. She takes care of seven children, but two children died due to malnutrition.

What I want to know is did you have any more annotations or thoughts and opinions to share out? In question 2, instead of telling us that you have annotations in your book, describe what intrigued you when reading this short story. Give more details on the image and share out your thoughts about it. Also always ask yourself questions. Do I need more details? Should this be where it is? Asking yourself these questions leads you to a well written essay. Also when looking at the picture, think of logos, ethos, and pathos, and how the image reflects these questions.

What I learned is how much detail and how much thought has been put out in answering the questions for the idea draft. For example, in Question 4, he precisely wrote about the authors' backgrounds, where they came from, and what their achievements are.
