General Info.

The Veil
• Marjiane goes to school + has to wear a black veil (like everybody)
• All womens have to wear a veil
• Male and Female separated between each other
• Marjiane wants to be a prophet
• Parents contacted for her career choice
• Lies to parents she wants to become a doctor but she truly wants to become a prophet
The Bicycle
• History of the revolution of her country (Islam)
• The color of the background and the surrounding are often/usually black
• She talks to god (she is religious)
The Water Cell
• She educate herself with books
• Marjiane wants to participate in a protest against the police
• Her parents fight against the army for freedom and the kind every single day
• At school, it seems that kids are brainwashed and believed the contrary of the truth.
• Her grandpa was a prince and later began to be a communist.
• Her grandpa was sent to prison for opposing the new regime and lived in prison for the rest of his life.
Persepolis
• Marjiane tried to talk to her grandma about her grandfather and she explains that they lost all their wealth and that she lived in poverty.
• Marjiane keeps on asking question about her grandpa while her father hasn’t came back from a protest.
• They were worried that he would never come home ever again.
• When her father came back, he had pictures of the protest.
• Marjiane starts and keeps on reading book about the Revolution
The Letter
• They have a maid at home, who’s name is Mehri
• She falls in love with the neighbor’s son
• Mehri 16 years old, didn’t know how to write so Marjiane would write for her to be sent to the neighbor’s son.
• Marijane’s dad knocked at the neighbor’s door and said to the son that Mehri was their maid that she can’t keep on sending letters because she has to stay in her social class.
• The next day, they both participated on the demonstration.
• Coming back, her parents were mad and they both got punished.
The Party
• Shah left his position and everybody was happy
• The regime changed
• Ripped books where history was told it was “fake and had to be changed”.
• Marjiane learned to forgive
The Heroes
• Police prisoners liberated and two freed prisons (Siamak & Mohsen) became friends with Marjiane’s family
• Both tell how they suffered and the tortures they went through
• She felt too overwhelmed with the stories, looks at herself in the mirror, starts crying and finds comfort with her mom and God at the end of the chapter.
Moscow
• Marjiane wanted her dad to be a hero. She thinks that a hero is someone that goes to prison.
• Uncle Annosh was a hero to her.
• He went to prison for nine years.
• When Annosh visited them, Marjiane would listen to their political discussion.
• There is a moment she cries because she hears things from the TV and their apperantly not “correct”.
The Sheep
• Marjiane’s friends had to leave Iran because of the Islamic Revolution.
• Uncle Anoosh is missing and later found out that he was arrested
• Marjiane comes and visit her and he says to her that she is the star of his life.
• He later got executed and she never felt so lost. Doesn’t talk to god anymore.
The Trip
• Everything closed, even the U.S embassy and schools
• Women forced to wear veil.
• Her parents and Marjiane went to a demonstrate where she saw for the first time a women stabbed in the leg.
• Last time they gone to a demonstration.
• Packed to go to Spain
• New war, against Saddam Hussein
• Marjiane friend’s dad is fighter pilot for Ian + later dies in battle
• Friends quote “I wish he were alive in jail rather than dead and a hero”
The Jewels
• War in Iraq is hell
• People are fighting for food
• Her mother’s friend house bombed and they later come to Marjiane house.
• Two ladies are talking to each other and humiliate Marjiane’s family with what they are saying
The Key
• pg. 95 “Mourning the war dead” daily routine, listen to song + pound their chests
• Marjiane makes fun of the routine
• pg.97 Her friends and Majianne got suspended for a week
• Her parents got called to school and it was pretty faster.
• All the family complain and don’t understand why kids need to be covered from head to toe.
• Pg. 98 “If hair is as stimulated as you say, then you need to shave your mustache!”
• Her second maid, Mrs. Nasrine came back home and had a painted gold (The painted gold key is suppose to mean that kids during the war and die they would go to heaven)
• Its propaganda by the government to recruit child soldiers.
The Wine
• More bombs kept falling and when they did, her family would run down to the secret parties.
• pg. 108-109 Going back home, they get arrested and questioned
• Her grandma gets diabetes and needs help.
The Cigarette
• Marjiane meets new friends that are slightly older than her and they made her a rebel.
• It created a bad behavior.
• The Islamic regime expand their islamic revolution.
• Marjiane smokes her first cigarette as an act of typical teenage rebellion, believing that she left behind her childhood in the process.
The Passport
• Uncle Taher depressed and disturbed by the slaughter of Iranian youth in the war and his inability to join his son.
• It would take to long to make a passport for him to go and see his son.
• Uncle Taher got a heart attacks and was head to the hospital
• Marjiane’s dad knows a guy that does fake passport
• A refugee girl, got caught and got executed trying to flee to Sweden
• When her uncle passed away, he was buried same time as his real passport arrived.
Kim Wilde
• A year later, Marjiane’s parent get their passports.
• They head to Turkey
• Marjiane doesn’t want to go but she takes everything that she wants and need
• Her favorite poster was put into her dad’s coat (because of no more space)
• pg. 133-134 A women humiliate her for wearing tight jeans and she cry when she comes back home.
The Shabbat
• When she went shopping with her friend, she heard bombs.
• The bombs bombed her street
• She finds her mom and she hugs her.
• She found the bracelet that her neighbor had (Neda) but its not attached anymore on her hand. It was found of the ground.
The Dowry
• Neda’s death caused Marjiane to become even more rebellious
• She hits the principal and get expelled back home
• pg. 144 After expelled it was difficult for her to find another school that would accept her.
• Marjiane takes her poster down and gives them to her friends (as a precious gift)
• While she leaves the airport her mother fainted.
The Soup (Chapter 20 - Persepolis 2)
• November 1984, Marjane is in Australia in a boarding house with nuns instead of staying with zozo because she got into a fight with her husband.
• Likes her independence at boarding house.
• Tries to be friend with Lucia
Tyrol
• pg. 165 Marjane is teased for her less-than-expert French: one of the kids tells her the word for "dick" instead of “ruler”.
• She makes friends: Mom, Julie, Thierry and Oliver.
• On chirstmas Marjiane stay home because Iran doesn’t do Christmas
• She is invited to Tyrol (southwest of Australia) by Lucia to spend time with her family
• pg. 172 Marjiane feels appreciated and happy and considers Lucia as her sister and her parents “her new parents”
Pasta
• pg. 177 A nun says that “Iranians have no education” after she said that Marjiane can’t eat in a pot.
• pg. 177 Marjiane replies to the nuns that “they were all nuns”
• She later got expelled again and lucky enough her friend, Julie agreed for her to move in
• Although she will never see Lucia again
The Pill
• Marjane enjoys the time she spends with Julie and her mother
• While Julie’s parents would go away, Julie would through parties and they would all smoke and get half-naked.
• She heard her friend, Julie having sex with the owner of the cafe shelter.
The Vegetables
• Puberty time
• pg. 189-190 Marjane goes through her awkward teen growth spurt and has a new punk-rock hairstyle.
• Finding herself still and pretends to smoke
• Feels betrayed by her parents, feels a sense of giving her freedom away.
• pg. 196 People talk about how ugly and weird she is.
• pg. 197 Quote: You are going to shut up or I am going to make you! I am Iranian and proud of it!”
• She felt she redeemed herself and for the first time in a year she felt proud.

The Horse
• Marjiane moved to a communal apartment with eight homosexuals.
• She gave up the punk look.

• Her mother didn’t recognize her because she was so grown up.

The Return

The Joke
• Marjiane’s entire family came to visit her but she didn’t want to
• Pg. 260 realized that her mother’s face has sprinkles (showed that they are becoming old)
• That same page, her mom received a call on Kia that she is almost dead while doing his military service.
• She went to visit him, they drank, he told a story that a great friend told him.

Skiing
The exam
• Marjiane meets Reza at a friends party.
• They both relate in many things and she compared her life to his.
• pg. 278 she married that man two years later.
• They both talk about their plan in the future.
• pg. 283 She got admitted for graphic arts.
The Makeup
• She wears makeup for Reza
• She calls on a poor guy who said some obscenities (which isn’t true) to deflect attention away from herself.
• Marjiane tells a story that Reza told him to her grandmother and she later gets mad.
• pg. 291 Calls Marjiane a “selfish bitch”.
• She is later mortified that her grandmother is disappointed in her.
The Convocation
• pg. 292 She is finally a student
• The administration cannot know that Marjine and Reza are together or they’ll be kicked.
• She meet new friends and told her she wears the veil like a beginner. (not a mean comment)
• Marjiane starts speaking what is on her mind
• pg. 297 She doesn’t agree on how men can wear what they want but not women.
• She is later congratulated by other student women for being courageous.
• Instead of expelling her, they make a new design for the uniform for female which was small step towards independence.
• Her grandmother was so happy about her and she earned respect.
The Socks
• During her art class she has trouble doing figure drawing of other females because they all wear a burka that covers from the head-to-toe.
• pg. 300 When she tried to draw a man, the teacher said that is was against the moral code.
• She spent an entire day at the committee for wearing socks
• pg. 302 All of those ideas of freedom are overwhelming her mind.
• During a party, couple guardians of the revolutions saw that Marjiane and couple girls are partying with some guys including one of her friend named Farzad who died that night while escaping by falling between two buildings. pg. 309&311
• She realizes that the regime doesn’t want people to party, so at the end of the chapter she drank more than she ever did in her life.
The Wedding
• pg. 311 Second year of graphic design
• Reza asked Marjiane if she wanted to get married and she said that she needed more time.
• Her dad wanted to meet Reza to talk about the three main things. Her dad also believe that Marjiane will divorce.
• Marjiane is about to get married and they do the traditional Iranian marriage.
• After being married and comming back home, she felt like she was between bars because a married women didn’t sound right to her.
• After one month of marriage, they fight and don’t sleep in the same bed.
The Satellite
• Iraq attacked Kuwait
• A friend of the family gets a satellite dish, for the family to get news from the outside world.
• She gets addicted to the TV
• Gets in a fight with her dad on her marriage that she should needs to keep her head straight for her future, such as getting her diploma.
• Pg. 327 quote: “Pushed by my parents, encouraged by Mr. M and his friends, and also a little thanks to myself, I change my life.”
• Pg. 327 quote: “ One must educate oneself”.
The End
• Marjiane and Reza are the two best students. They are going to do a project together (the subject is to draw a theme park based on our mythological heroes.)
• They both work hard and get along again from a long time.
• The project was unachievable because the mayor’s deputy said that the characters that she drew were women without a veil and that we can see their shapes and their hair.
• She says to her grandmother t’hat she doesn’t love Reza anymore and wants divorce.
• Found a job as a illustrator at an economics magazine.
• She finally divorce with Reza
• Marjiane wants to go to France
• Pg.339 Important quote: “Not having been able to build anything in my own country, I prepared to leave it once again. I went to France for the first Tim in June 1994 to take a test to enter the school of decorative arts in Strasbourg. I was accepted. Then I had to go back to Iran to exchange my tourist visa for a student visa.”
• Marjiane put flowers on her grandfather tomb and next to the prion where her uncle Annosh got executed.
• pg. 341 When she left at the airport, her father cried, her mother didn’t faint and her grandmother was happy but still had tears.
• It was the last time that she had seen her grandmother. She later passed away in 1996
