THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ACT OF READING
Paulo Freire

Summary:

"The importance of the Act of Reading" written originally by Paulo Freire in Portuguese and translated by Loretta Slover in English, talks about the importance of the act of reading through his experiences in his childhood, teenager and young adult life. Freire explains what he felt about his memories and uses detailed imaginary to describe all the things he seen when he was younger that he still recognizes couple years after. Throughout his writing, he shows that it is possible to view objects and experiences as texts, words and letters to develop knowledge and awareness in the world.

Quotes:

"Some of the trees were like persons to me, such the intimacy between us. In their shadow I played, and in the branches susceptible to me height I experiences at the small risk which prepared for greater risks and adventures." pg.6
When Freire went back to his old house, where he was born, his childhood memories came back to him. In this quote, he describes how the trees he used to play with were just like people, and prepared him for greater risks and adventures in the future.

"I felt myself drawn enthusiastically to re-reading essential moments in my own practice of reading whose memory I retained from the most remote experiences of childhood, from adolescence, from young manhood, when a critical understanding of the act of reading book shape in me." pg.5
I find it interesting how he can find a better understanding of himself by re-writting moment in his life and at the same time he practices his reading.

"As I became familiar with my world, however, as I perceived and understood it better by reading it, my terrors diminished." pg.7
The more Freire wrote, the more he became familiar with his world. He feels a type of joy and enthusiasm when he understands more about his himself.

Questions:
1) How long has he been teacher adults to read and write?
2) Did he ever got any kids? Was it easy for Freire to explain the importance of reading?
