LEARNING TO READ
Malcolm X (1925 - 1965)
Summary:
The main character, Malcolm, is a African-American who self educated himself to read and learn while his time in prison because of his frustration at not being able to express and articulate his feelings through writing. He couldn't even write a straight line. He requested a dictionary with some pencils and tablets. Everyday and overnight he would read the dictionary and write the words on his tablet. He started to write every word down starting by the letter A. As he completed a page, he would study the word and its definition. He was proud of remembering couple words the next morning and amazed of the amount of words that were in the world. His motivation for studying all the words in the dictionary made him fall in love to read and understand what the book is talking about. After reading them, he didn't feel imprisoned and never felt so free in his life. The knowledge he was grasping was liberating him. He later got interested in the general history of black race in America, mostly the civil rights of humans. Malcolm became the speaking leader for the separatism during the civil rights movement.

He talks before about how he could for the first time pick up a book, read it and begin to understand what the book was actually talking about. While self educating himself, his mentality felt free even though he was physically in prison. This quote is powerful because he basically says that educating himself freed him from his past and gave him a new life.
"I never will forget how shocked I was when I began reading about slavery's total horror. It made such an impact upon me that it later became one of my favorite subjects" pg.4
Ones Malcolm could read and understand every words, he started to read books more focused into African blacks and slavery. It opened his eyes wider and felt that there was something wrong in this world. The stories that he read left a scar so he decided to keep learning about that subject.
"I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life. As I see it today, the ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive." pg.6
During his time in prison, Malcom feel in love in reading because it teaches him something everyday. The more he kept reading, the more he continued to developed his mind. It was only after being able to read, that he knew what was his purpose of being alive.
